This grower is sure of this plant identification.

An unusual deciduous shrub from China, Viburnum setigerum displays drooping, green berries which gradually turn bright pinkish-red. Leaves are glaucous green, sometimes with autumn tints.

Small white flowers clusters appear in early summer but the plant is usually grown for its ornamental fruit and berries which last well into autumn/winter.

A choice shrub with lots of late interest.

Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Hardy.

Habit: Viburnum setigerum grows to be a branching, usually multi-stemmed medium sized shrub or slightly larger in very warm gardens.

Notes: A specimen of Viburnum setigerum, planted in the woodland garden surrounding our nursery had reached a height of 1.5 m, a spread of 1.5 m after 8 years.

Viburnum sargentii var. setigerum. This is a 3m tall deciduous shrub. The leaves are 3-lobed and mature from dark brown to yellow-green. The individual flowers are large and carried on heads about 10cm wide. The berries are red.


They are moderately frost hardy. Grow them in any well-drained soil in sun or light shade.
