Majestic tree native to South-western North America, Calocedrus decurrens is a very distinctive, columnar conifer with dark green, aromatic foliage. Visitors to Westonbirt arboretum in Gloucestershire can see a group of these statuesque trees, planted close to each other many years ago but still are not touching.

Calocedrus decurrens grows to be a splendid, very narrow specimen tree.

Grower Notes

Position: Full sun.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Hardy.
Rate of Growth: Slow until established then moderate.
Habit: Eventually a large tree with a narrow, upright habit.
Height: 30 m (98 ft).
Spread: up to 6 m (20 ft)

Notes: Calocedrus decurrens is initially slow growing. After one or two years, once established, it starts to grow at a more vigorous rate.

Description

Calocedrus decurrens (Incense cedar). A slow-growing tall tree with a conical shapely habit and attractive foliage. The foliage is a glossy dark green and the cylindrical cones open with 3 splayed segments. ‘Intricata’ is a compact dwarf cultivar; its twisted branches turn brown in winter.

Cultivation

They will grow in any well drained soil in sun or partial shade. If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back.

Specimen Year-round interest. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts butterflies
