Description

Salvia verticillata ‘Purple Rain’ (Whorled clary). This wild flower from Southern Europe is strong smelling and grows on waste or bare ground.

Cultivation

Some species will tolerate only light frosts, but some of the perennials are more frost-hardy. They will grow well when planted in full sun in well drained light soil with adequate watering in the summer.

Interest and use

Grown for their tubular, 2-lipped, often brightly coloured flowers and aromatic foliage. Leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods. Suitable for coastal conditions.
