Pinus strobus ‘Torulosa’

For sale by Bluebell Nursery

This grower is sure of this plant identification.

A lovely tree, Pinus strobus 'Torulosa' is grown for its fascinating, contorted and twisted, steel blue/green needles. It has been amusingly referred to in the past by one of our arboretum visitors as the plant with the 'really bad hair day'!

In our opinion, it is a very handsome, specimen tree and the contorted needles are so unusual that people stop and stare when they come across it.

Plant Finder: about Pinus strobus ‘Torulosa’

Common names

Eastern White Pine 'Torulosa',, Twisted White Pine

Pinus strobus ‘Torulosa’ (Eastern White Pine 'Torulosa',). This is a striking upright, narrowly pyramidal, evergreen, coniferous tree with very twisted, long needles which are blue-green on the top and two white bands on the underside. Female cones are cylindrical, tapered and green, ripening to brown.

They will grow in a wide range of conditions, are wind resistant and will thrive on soils of moderate to low fertility which are well drained. If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit, remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back.

Interest and use

A really sculptural tree grown for its form, as well as for year-round foliage interest.
