A large, vigorous and handsome evergreen tree, Tsuga heterophylla is native to the parts of Western North America. The leaves are needle-like, mid green in colour and flattened in appearance. Established trees produce small rounded cones.

Tsuga heterophylla grows with a conical habit and gracefully spreading branches. A superb woodland tree once established.

Position: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Prefers moist, fertile soil. Tsuga heterophylla will generally not grow well in shallow, chalky soils.

Description

Tsuga heterophylla (Western hemlock spruce). This species of tree will produce beautiful foliage. The short needles are fern-like and dark green to yellowish green, with horizontal drooping branches. It will need acidic soil, plentiful moisture, high summer humidity and protection from the hot sun and strong winds. This tree looks at its best in a mass or grove plantings or planted as a specimen in a large lawn. Cultivation

They are fully to frost-hardy trees, they will tolerate shade and will thrive in slightly acidic, deep, well-drained soil.
