A vigorous and semi-evergreen climber, Akebia quinata has lovely lush green leaves and clusters of small trailing, chocolate-purple flowers in spring. These colourful flowers are followed by dark-purple, sausage-like fruits after long hot summers.

Akebia quinata is an unusual and charming climbing plant.

Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Hardy. Akebia quinata is semi-evergreen and will drop its leaves in a cold winter.

Akebia quinata (Chocolate vine). This is a semi-evergreen climber which will flower in late spring. The leaves are pale green maturing to blue-green and divided into 5 leaflets. The flowers are produced in racemes of small, cup-shaped, dark purple blooms and have a vanilla scent. Occasionally, large, sausage shaped purple fruit pods will appear, which are edible.


Avoid disturbing the roots.

Interest and use

Wall or trellis, producing ornamental purple fruit pods in autumn. Spring interest.
