An eye catching selection of chocolate vine with white flowers, Akebia quinata 'Alba' has cascades of fragrant, pure white flowers in spring which stand out well against the handsome, deep green leaves.

An unusual plant and ideal as a semi-evergreen climber for growing up trellis or wires against walls, fences or a pagoda.

Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: Hardy. Akebia quinata 'Shirobana' is semi-evergreen and will drop its leaves in a cold winter.

Akebia quinata ‘Alba’ (Chocolate Vine). This is a white flowered version of the Chocolate Vine with dark green leaves that are blue-green underneath and have a tinge of purple in winter. The flowers form pendent racemes up to 12cm long, have a strong spicy vanilla scent and are creamy-white. The fruits are themselves ornamental as well as edible being large and sausage-shaped, with a sweet taste. In Chinese traditional medicine, the stems are used as a remedy for insufficient lactation in nursing mothers.
