In the wild, this fantastic twining climber is found growing up trees all over Japan and China. Celastrus orbiculatus has rich green foliage in spring and summer followed by butter-yellow autumn colours with golden seed heads and brilliant-scarlet fruits in autumn.

A great choice of climber for large gardens or woodlands where it can cover substantial trees or buildings when established.

Description

Celastrus orbiculatus (Bittersweet). This is a climbing deciduous twining vine. It will grow to a height of 11m and is grown for it's ornamental fruits and striking autumn foliage. The mid green leaves are broadly elliptic, and the flowers will appear in the summer. They will also produce reddish-yellow berries on the new growth.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy, they will grow in any soil in full or partial shade and will like regular feeding. You will need to prune in the spring to cut out old wood and maintain the shape.
