An attractive, tough perennial, Echinacea purpurea is reasonably fast growing with large pinkish-purple flowers with a distinctive raised central orange cone. With its long flowering period and vivid colour, this is a superb choice of plant for a sunny border.

Description

Echinacea purpurea (Purple coneflower). This species is an upright clumped perennial herb which is easy to grow. The flowers are large daisy-like flowers and they have a brown central cone surrounded by purple, red or pink, drooping petals. The foliage is comprised of lance-shaped, dark green leaves.

Cultivation

This perennial will require moist, humus-rich, well drained soil. It will tolerate wind and drought. You will need to dead regularly to prolong the flowering.

Border, cutting bed, medicinal. Summer/Autumn interest.
