Description

Lilium genus (Lily). They are mainly summer-flowering bulbs, which produce a branched leafy stem. They have lance-shaped or linear leaves, which grow up to 22cms long, and are scattered or in whorls. The flowers are usually trumpet to bowl shaped and fragrant. The plants have a spread of up to 30cm. They are usually frost hardy, and will need full sun and any well drained soil.

Cultivation

They will need good drainage. Some prefer alkaline soil, others will not tolerate it. They all prefer the sun, but make sure the roots are deep to keep them cool.

Interest and use

Grown for their often fragrant, brightly coloured flowers. Makes a good container plant.

    I get excess plants when they outgrow and need thinning. Can't bear to throw away and also addicted to taking cuttings! I tend to buy Echinaceas because, altho I love them and coddle them, they don't always survive the winter.
