Elephant's ear
Alocasia genus (Elephant's ear). This genus has about 70 species of evergreen perennials from south east Asia with underground rhizomes. The leaves are heart-shaped and between 20-90cm long depending on the species you have. They produce tiny flowers on a spadix enclosed on a leaf-like spathe. Most of the species contain poisons which can cause a rapid numbing and swelling of the tongue and throat.
They are frost tender with a min of 15C. They need a high level of humidity with partial shade and well-drained soil.
Grown for their attractive foliage.
