Acanthus mollis (Bear's breeches). This is a large ornamental plant with glossy dark green leaves, which has a tropical appearance. The flowers are purple and white, borne on long spikes in late summer to mid autumn.
This perennial prefers cool moist soil, but tolerates sunny and dry conditions. It is more of a woodland plant than other acanthuses, and grows well in a sheltered spot. This species should be planted where its rampant growth can be confined.
