Common names

Lupin

Description

Lupinus ‘Noble Maiden’ (Lupin). This genus consists of about 200 species of annuals, perennials and semi-evergreen and evergreen shrubs and subshrubs. They produce upright spikes of showy pea-flowers in a range of colours including blue, purple, pink, white, yellow, orange and red. They are fully to frost hardy, and will prefer sun with well drained, alkaline soil.

Cultivation

They prefer climates with cool wet winters and long dry summers. They should be planted in full sun with well-drained, moderately fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil. They need plenty of water in the growing season. Remove seed heads of most varieties to prevent self seeding.

Interest and use

Grown for their large, imposing racemes of pea-like flowers. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts butterflies
