Begonia, Elephant's ear
Begonia genus (Begonia). This genus consists of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, which are grown for their ornamental foliage and colourful flowers. They are named after a French patron of botany, Michel Begon who lived during the seventeenth century. There are over 1,500 species ranging from perennials that will grow only a few cms high, to shrubs which will grow to 3m or more high. Most of them are evergreen and have broad leaves.
Grow in light well-drained soil or loam-based potting compost. Water frequently in hot weather but do not allow the soil to become too moist. A balanced liquid fertiliser can be applied occasionally especially when in full growth. Pot on each spring. They prefer slightly acidic soil.
