Snapdragon, Weasel's snout
Antirrhinum genus (Snapdragon). This is a genus of perennials and semi-evergreen sub-shrubs usually grown as annuals, flowering from spring to autumn. All of the flowers in this genus are 'personate' meaning that the corrollas have two lips which close, giving the resemblance of the lips of a face.
The genus name comes from the Greek 'antirrhinon' which means 'like a nose' and probably refers to the mature seed pod.
The exact taxonomy of this genus is disputed, with either just 2, 21 or 36 species with subdivisions being recognised.
Fully to half hardy. Needs sun and rich, well drained soil. Dead-head to prolong flowering season.
Grown for the flowers. Can be used for cut flowers. Suitable for coastal conditions.
