A low maintenance perennial herb, chives are grown for their pungent, mild tasting leaves that are delicious when chopped up finely and mixed into a salad or added to other dishes – they go particularly well with potatoes and egg. Although they are primarily grown for their leaves, chives have edible pink flowers that make an attractive garnish for salads.

Allium schoenoprasum (Chives). This is a hardy perennial bulb with narrowly cylindrical leaves and small rounded umbels of purple bell-shaped flowers which fade to pale purple.
Easy to grow in any well drained, loamy soil with full sun. When the plants become leggy, trim the hollow, grass-like leaves to renew the planting. Deadhead the fading flowers to promote further blooming.
