Description

Astilbe genus (False goatsbeard). This genus consists of summer flowering perennials. They have upright stems and tufts of ferny leaves with toothed edges. The flowers are produced in tiny panicles of white to pink blooms. This genus has about 14 species of pretty, early to late summer perennials, and they can be grow in moist ground beside woodland streams. The pointed plume-like panicles of tiny, white to pink or red flowers rise well above the foliage.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will need rich moist soil and some will need partial shade. Leave undisturbed if possible, and give an annual spring mulch of well rotted compost.

Interest and use

Grown for their panicles of flowers. Can be used for ground cover.
