Description

Musa genus (Banana). This is a genus of evergreen, palm-like suckering perennials, with false stems formed from an overlapping leaf sheath. They are grown for their foliage flowers and fruits, not all of which are edible.

Cultivation

They are frost hardy to frost tender; minimum temperature of 18C. Grow in sun or partial shade in humus-rich, well drained soil. Some of these species can be cultivated as house plants or in greenhouses. They will require fertile, moist soil and full sun. You will need to protect from winds.

Interest and use

Grown for their foliage, flowers and fruits (bananas), not all of which are edible.
