Plant Finder: about the Digitalis genus

Common names

Foxglove

Description

Digitalis genus (Foxglove). There are about 20 species of biennials and perennials some of which are evergreen. It will bear tall spikes of tubular, 2-lipped flowers which will grow in various colours i.e. purple-shades, white, cream, yellow and pink. The leaves are simple mid-green and entire or toothed. Digitalis is a drug widely used in modern medicine for the control of ventricular response in atrial fibrillation and the treatment of congestive heart failure. However, those un-trained in herbalism or medicine should treat this plant as poisonous.

Cultivation

The plants are hardy and will need sun or partial shade with humus-rich, well drained soil that does not dry out excessively.

Interest and use

Grown for their flower spikes in summer.
