Plant Finder: about Salvia × microphylla ‘Hot Lips’

Description

Salvia × microphylla ‘Hot Lips’. A newer variety with 'hot' red and white flowers that are scented and attract butterflies and bees. Drought tolerant. The aromatic foliage may turn dark red in autumn.

Cultivation

Some species will tolerate only light frosts, but some of the perennials are more frost-hardy. They will grow well when planted in full sun in well drained light soil with adequate watering in the summer. Cut back in spring.

Interest and use

Grown for their tubular, 2-lipped, often brightly coloured flowers and aromatic foliage. Leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods. Suitable for coastal conditions.
