Sage
Salvia genus (Sage). These are annuals, biennials, perennials and evergreen or semi-evergreen shrubs and sub-shrubs. Salvia is an ancient Latin name which is derived from salveo which means to save or to heal. There are about 900 species, which produce tubular shaped flowers, in many different colours. The leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods.
Some species will tolerate only light frosts, but some of the perennials are more frost-hardy. They will grow well when planted in full sun in well drained light soil with adequate watering in the summer. Cut back in spring.
Grown for their tubular, 2-lipped, often brightly coloured flowers and aromatic foliage. Leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods. Suitable for coastal conditions.
