Plant Finder: about Monarda didyma

Common names

Bee balm, Bergamot, Oswego tea, Sweet bergamot

Monarda didyma (Bee balm). This species produces whorls of tubular flowers that float on top of the stems with hairy, mint-scented foliage.

They are either fully or frost-hardy plants, which will need to be planted in full sun although a little shade is acceptable. The soil must be well drained, make sure the annuals grow in sandy soil. Remember to deadhead this will prolong the blooming period.

Interest and use

Fragrance, naturaliser, cutting bed, wildflower/meadow, border. Summer/Autumn interest. Attracts humming birds in suitable geographical locations.
