Grower Notes

Both plants are easy to care for. Best kept in a south facing window sill, or even better, in a conservatory. They will need regular watering during the spring and summer...a good soaking each watering and then leave until the soil is dry then water again. So maybe once a fortnight but this can vary depending on weather. Ease off the water a bit during the winter months.

Plant Finder: about the Mammillaria genus

Common names

Pincushion cactus

Description

Mammillaria genus (Pincushion cactus). This large genus of cacti contains around 150 dwarf species, they produce short, globular or clump-forming, erect columns. In the spring and summer funnel or daisy-shaped flowers are produced and this is followed by light green or reddish fruit. Grow in full sun and very well drained soil.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, with a minimum temperature of 5-10C. They require full sun for maximum flowering. They are easy to grow, and prefer light, sandy soil. Keep plants completely dry in the winter, otherwise they rot easily.

Interest and use

Grown for their funnel-shaped flowers.
