Plant Finder: about the Freesia genus

Freesia genus. This is a genus of around 20 species of herbaceous perennials producing narrow tufts of leaves, and loose spikes of 6-tepaled flowers, many of which a fragrant. They have either flat, or narrowly funneled flowers.

This genus was named after the German physician Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (1795–1876).

Frost hardy. Plant 5cm deep in an open, sunny situation and in well drained soil. In cold areas, lift corms and store dry for winter.

Interest and use

Grown for their red flowers, followed by egg-shaped seed pods that split to reveal red seeds.
