Plant Finder: about the Dianthus genus

Common names

Carnation, Flower of the gods, Pink

Description

Dianthus genus (Carnation). In this genus there are about 300 species of evergreen or semi evergreen, mainly summer-flowering perennials, annuals and biennials. Carnations and pinks are excellent for cut flowers and border decoration. They have narrowly lance-shaped silvery or grey-green leaves and scattered flowering stems which may coil outwards on the carnations.

Cultivation

They are fully to half hardy, and will need an open sunny position with well drained slightly alkaline soil. The tall species of carnations and pinks have a loose habit and will need staking. Dead-heading of repeat-flowering types is beneficial.

Interest and use

Grown for their mass of flowers, often scented, some of which are excellent for cutting. Suitable for coastal conditions.
