Winter heath, Heath
Erica carnea (Winter heath). This is a low-spreading, frost-hardy species from the mountains of central and southern Europe. Grows to 30cm high with densely crowded branches. Throughout winter and into early spring, produces profuse, small, bell-shaped, purple-pink flowers with protruding darker stamens. This is an ideal groundcover between taller shrubs or beneath deciduous trees, or in rock gardens. Well-known cultivars include, ‘Ruby Glow’ with deep rose red flowers; ‘Springwood Pink’ with a vigorous trailing habit and rose pink flowers. These cultivars are widely planted.
After flowering each year the plants can be lightly pruned to keep a bushy and compact habit.
