Money tree, Jade tree, Friendship tree, Jade plant
Crassula ovata (Money tree). Often confused with Portulacaria 'afra' also known as ‘jade plant’, but easily distinguished by its much smaller leaves, which are not in opposite pairs. It is a fast-growing South African shrubby, succulent species. Stems are thick shiny and brownish whilst the leaves are broadly wedge-shaped and may be edged with red. In autumn and winter small, white to pale pink, star-shaped flowers appear. ‘Hobbit’ is a dwarf cultivar.
They are frost hardy to frost tender, min 5-7C. They will prefer full sun while others like partial shade. Grow them in very well drained soil with a little water in the winter. Most are easy to grow.
Makes a good tub plant for patios and balconies.
