Plant Finder: about the Monstera genus

Common names

Swiss cheese plant, Windowleaf, Cheese plant

Description

Monstera genus (Swiss cheese plant). This genus consists of large-growing evergreen tropical climbers. The leaves are large with usually lobed leaves. The flowers are spathes which bloom in shades of white or green-cream. The fruits are white and in some species edible. You will need to grow in humus-rich well drained soil with light shade in the summer.

Cultivation

They are usually grown as indoor plants, as they are frost-tender, with a minimum of 15-18C. They will prefer partial-shade with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Provide support. If necessary, shorten long stems in spring.

Interest and use

Grown for their large handsome leaves.
