Allium schoenoprasum (Chives). This is a hardy perennial bulb with narrowly cylindrical leaves and small rounded umbels of purple bell-shaped flowers which fade to pale purple.

Easy to grow in any well drained, loamy soil with full sun. When the plants become leggy, trim the hollow, grass-like leaves to renew the planting. Deadhead the fading flowers to promote further blooming.

Interest and use

Culinary, border, container, edging, rock garden.

This is an edible herb which will taste of onion. The flowers can be used to make a delicately flavoured and pink-tinged vinegar.
