Plant Finder: about the Primula genus

Common names

Primrose, Primula, Polyanthus

Primula genus (Primrose). These are annuals, biennials and perennials, some of which are evergreen. They are produced in rosettes of basal leaves with tubular, bell or primrose-shaped flowers. The flower stems, leaves and sepals are covered with farina (a waxy powder).

They are hardy to frost tender, and they prefer fertile, well-drained soils. They grow in partial-shade with ample water. Repot pot-grown plants annually. Tidy-up fading foliage and dead-head as flowering ceases.

Interest and use

There are primulas suitable for almost every type of site; border, screen garden, bog garden, pool margin, greenhouse and alpine house.
