Plant Finder: about Crocus sativus

Common names

Saffron crocus, Saffron

Description

Crocus sativus (Saffron crocus). In the autumn, the blooms are purple with purple veining and have large red stigmas which will protrude beyond the petals; they are harvested and dried to become saffron. It will take about 4,000 pistils to make one ounce of saffron.

Cultivation

You must plant the bulbs in late summer or early autumn. In the summer after the foliage dies back, let your bulbs dry out, for the best results in the following season.
