Plant Finder: about Dianthus gratianopolitanus

Common names

Cheddar pink


Dianthus gratianopolitanus (Cheddar pink). This is a compact creeping carpet of blue-grey, linear leaves about 30cm wide. The flowers are single, fragrant pink blooms with toothed petals they will appear in the spring and until the first frost, they are borne on 20cm wiry stems. It will require a very well drained soil.


They are fully to half hardy, and will need an open sunny position with well drained slightly alkaline soil. The tall species of carnations and pinks have a loose habit and will need staking. Dead-heading of repeat-flowering types is beneficial.
