Hesperis matronalis (Sweet rocket). This species produces blooms which are purple, lilac or white. The leaves are narrow oval and smooth and will grow 30-90cm in height. Sweet Rocket needs a steady water supply and deadheading will encourage a second blooming session. Fully hardy, this choice plant requires full to partial sun and well drained soil. Will self-sow readily or you may propagate by seed every few years in spring or summer up until 2 months before frost or take basal cuttings in spring. Effective in mass plantings or as a naturaliser in a meadow garden.
Tends to become woody at base, so raise new stock from seed every few years.
Cutting bed, naturaliser, wildflower/meadow.
