Plant Finder: about Salvia microphylla

Common names

Sage

Description

Salvia microphylla (Sage). This is a small-leafed rounded shrub. It produces bright green rounded leaves and a mass of scarlet flowers from late spring to early winter.

Cultivation

Some species will tolerate only light frosts, but some of the perennials are more frost-hardy. They will grow well when planted in full sun in well drained light soil with adequate watering in the summer.

Interest and use

Grown for their tubular, 2-lipped, often brightly coloured flowers and aromatic foliage. Leaves of some species may be used for flavouring foods. Suitable for coastal conditions.
