A spectacular biennial Echium that forms a metre-wide rosette of silvery green leaves in its first year. The following year, given the right conditions following a mild winter in a sheltered south-facing border, it can produce a tower of blue funnel-shaped flowers up to 4m high.
Echium pininana (Borage). This species is an evergreen rosette forming biennial/perennial. The leaves are elliptical-lance-shaped and light green. The flowers will bloom in panicle-like cymes which are blue from mid to late summer and rise in a tower of flowers up to 5 metres.
When grown under glass use a loam-based compost with full light, When grown outdoors grow in moderately fertile well-drained soil in full sun.
