I call this my Marmite plant. You will love it or hate it! New Zealand ironwood is hardy down to -8C and adds structure to the garden with its long thin leaves with a yellow stripe down the middle.
Pseudopanax crassifolius (Lancewood). This small tree the leaves are sword-like and narrow leaves about 1m long, they have a dark shiny green above, and purplish beneath, they have sharply serrated edges and reddish midrib. You will also find small black ornamental fruits which are produced by female plants.
They will grow in well-drained soil with enriched organic matter either in sun or partial-shade. Propagation is from seed or cuttings which are taken in the summer.
Grown for their unusual foliage and fruits. Used for landscaping and may also be grown in large containers. Insignificant flowers are produced in summer.
