A grass like plant from New Zealand with green and red strap like leaves. Star shaped flowers in lavender-blue with yellow anthers followed by dark blue berries. Sun to partial shade and moist soil
Dianella tasmanica (Flax lily). Native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Spreads from underground rhizomes where arching, strap-like leaves emerge to 1.25m long and 35mm wide. Panicles of star-shaped, blue-purple flowers are borne in branching sprays to 1m tall in spring and early summer; these are followed by glossy, dark blue berries.
They are frost tender to half hardy. It is suitable for outdoors only in mild areas and elsewhere will require a cold greenhouse or frame. They will need a sunny position with well drained, neutral to acidic soil.
