Tree like aloe which may grow up to 2m. Has spikes of scarlet flowers during summer. Has silvery blue leaves. May take a couple of degrees of frost if kept dry.
Aloe plicatilis (Fan Aloe). This species of aloe is a branched woody variety growing up to 5m tall and wide. It has clusters of spineless, green-grey, strap-like leaves arranged like a fan. The flowers are produced in upright spikes of red-orange, tubular blooms.
When grown under glass grow in a loam-based compost in full light. When grown outdoors grow in a fertile well-drained soil with full sun. Does not tolerate frost.
Ornamental. Used in traditional medicine to stimulate the immune system and to treat diabetes.
