Plant Finder: about Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’

Common names

Bailey acacia, Cootamundra wattle, Golden mimosa

Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’ (Bailey acacia). This species is an evergreen shrub or small tree, with bipinnate grey-green leaves. The flowers are produced in racemes of golden yellow blooms.

This is a very hardy, drought-tolerant tree. It performs best in dry, well drained soils. This species can be used as a street tree, and like all acacias it is a legume, which can fix nitrogen and make it available to the trees and plants around it. Deep, infrequent watering will encourage strong well developed roots that provide more support for the tree. If more of a shrub effect is required, the lead shoot should be removed. If a tree form is required, the lower branches should be removed. Prune to open the interior of the plant and to reduce die-back of shaded branches and damage by wind. Thin by removing branches entirely from the trunk. This hardy Acacia is commonly planted but never tiresome. It is useful as a multi-trunk shrubby tree and is effective for erosion control on embankments.
