This grower is sure of this plant identification.
The king Protea from South Africa. A rounded shrub with huge water lily shaped flowers that are up to 8in wide. Distinctive oval mid to dark green leaves. Height 2m. Plant in full sun and well drained soil. Can take -6C, but if frosted should re-grow from base.

Protea cynaroides (King protea). This species will grow about 1.5m tall with several sprawling stems. The flowerheads are huge they have a shallow-bowl shape they are about 30cm across. The leaves are oval and leathery and about 15cm long they are shiny green with a long red stalk.
They need an open, sunny position with light acidic, well-drained soil. You need to prune after flowering to maintain shape and to promote new growth.
Grown for their colourful bracted flower heads.
