Plant Finder: about Iris foetidissima

Common names

Roast beef plant, Gladwyn, Stinking iris, Scarlet seeded iris, Gladdon

Iris foetidissima (Roast beef plant). This is an unusual member of the Iris family which usually has purplish-yellow and brown flowers; though sometimes
yellow striated mauve. The flowers are followed by seed pods which open to reveal bright orange-red seeds that are glossy and ornamental and look very striking next to the dark foliage. The leaves when rubbed or broken have a strong and unmistakeable whiff of roast beef. They prefer moist, but not waterlogged soil, that is rich.

They are fully hardy, but some groups may thrive only in specific growing conditions. All irises are best planted in late summer and early autumn. Outdoors you can grow them in well drained, fertile, neutral or slightly acid or alkaline soil in full sun to lightly dappled shade. In order for irises to thrive, most of them need long, hot summers. Irises that require protection from rain or frost should be grown under glass.

Interest and use

Ornamental, border, cutting bed. Summer interest for flowers and Winter for seeds which look well in a shady bed beneath trees.
