Echinops sphaerocephalus (Globe thistle). A clumped perennial from Central and south Europe. Grey green leaves are pinnatifid to pinnatisect and pinnately lobed. Flowers are blue-mauve and appear in mid summer.


They are fully hardy and will grow well in full sun in poor soil. Dead head to prevent self seeding.

Interest and use

Grown for their globe-like, spiky flower heads. Borders. Suitable for coastal conditions.
