Akebia quinata

For sale by Rachel the Gardener

This grower is sure of this plant identification.

Chocolate Vine: Vigorous hardy climber, semi-evergreen with very attractive five-lobed leaves. Dark purple flowers appear in spring, and in hot summers, they are followed by sausage-shaped fruits.

Climbs by way of twining tendrils, so if you give it a little support when small, it will soon get the idea and head for the heavens.

I also have the white-flowered variety for sale.

Grower Notes

Full sun preferred, well drained fertile soil preferred, but actually it's a bit of a thug and will do well almost anywhere!

Pruning is not necessary, unless it outgrows the space, in which case just cut it back in early summer - after flowering - and let it regrow.
