Garland flower, Kahili ginger
Hedychium gardnerianum (Garland flower). This species produces flowering spikes which hold large clusters of clear, yellow flowers with long, red stamens that bloom and will remain very fragrant all summer. The leaves are a medium grey-green large and tropical looking. This is a tender perennial which will grow to a height of 1.5m in the right conditions which include rich, moist soil. Remove faded flowers by the stem and cut to the ground. Rhizomes should not be divided when dormant, but in early spring. The Garland Flower will tolerate some drought and in sunnier climates partial shade is recommended. To grow in cooler climates, rhizomes must be dug and stored over winter. This perennial may be grown as a houseplant as long as it has even moisture. Indoors, grow in filtered light and after flowering reduce watering.
