Plant Finder: about Alcea rosea

Common names

Alcea rosea (Hollyhock). This species is a vigorous, upright biennial or short-lived perennial producing rounded, roughly hairy, light green leaves, which grow up to 3cm long and are cut into 3-7 shallow lobes. Terminal racemes of single, open, funnel-shaped white, pink, purple or yellow flowers are produced, which can be up to 10cm across. These appear in summer and early autumn.

The genus name Alcea is said to be from the Greek word for healing 'altho' and the common name is from Holi (or 'Holy') and 'Hock' which is another common name for 'Mallow'.

Also known as Althaea rosea.
