Iris germanica

To collect for free from Vaughan Wright

This grower is fairly sure of this plant identification.

These are very happy in our damp Welsh borders: so happy I need to dig some up. Any takers?

Plant Finder: about Iris germanica

Common names

Orris root, Common garden iris, German iris, Bearded iris, Garden iris

Iris germanica (Orris root). This is a bearded iris with a spreading habit. It has sparsely branched stems which will produce up to 6 yellow-bearded, blue-purple to blue-violet flowers in the spring. It will grow to about 1m tall. This is an early-flowering variety and it will prefer full sun.

They are fully hardy, but some groups may thrive only in specific growing conditions. All irises are best planted in late summer and early autumn. Outdoors you can grow them in well drained, fertile, neutral or slightly acid or alkaline soil in full sun to lightly dappled shade. In order for irises to thrive, most of them need long, hot summers. Irises that require protection from rain or frost should be grown under glass.

Perrenial plants which might enjoy setting up in damp conditions. We can offer both sun and shade. I need ground cover to combat the native weeds. I am looking for Bog Rosemary compacta, and Frogbit for the fish trough (too small to call it a pond), an acer called Red Wine, and winter aconite.
