A common Japanese culinary herb used whole or cut into thin strips as a seasoning in hot or cold Japanese dishes.

Young leaves and seedlings are eaten raw or cooked. The flavour is unusual for western taste with hints of cinnamon, coriander and citrus.

Shiso is rich in vitamins A, B2, C, Chlorophyll, iron and calcium, and it contains linoleic acid, which helps to dissolve cholesterol.

Perilla frutescens (Beefsteak plant). The leaves are red-purple and extremely attractive, they will range in colours from white to reddish-pink on a single plant. It is a half-hardy annual, grown for its colourful foliage.


You will need to plant in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial-shade. The young plants will tolerate light frosts and should be planted in late winter.
