Plant Finder: about Geranium × magnificum

Description

Geranium × magnificum. This species is a vigorous garden hybrid, it will form clumps 60cm high. It has hairy deeply cut leaves that will colour in the autumn. The flowers are abundant violet-blue with reddish veined and saucer-shaped, they will appear in mid-summer.

Cultivation

They are fully to half hardy. Most species will prefer sun, but some do better in the shade. They will grow in any but waterlogged soil. Outdoors, grow larger species and hybrids in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Grow small species and hybrids in humus-rich, sharply drained soil in full sun. Under glass, grow half hardy species in loam-based potting compost with added sharp sand, in bright filtered light. During the growing season, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. Water sparingly in winter.

Interest and use

Grown for their attractive flowers and often as ground cover. Compact species are suitable for rock gardens. Suitable for coastal conditions.
