Raised from seed
Dianthus carthusianorum (Carthusian pink). A grass-like species from southern and central Europe. A tufted perennial to about 20cm high, which has pale green leaves. In summer flattened terminal clusters, to 5cm across, bear deep pink to purple or white flowers.
They are fully to half hardy, and will need an open sunny position with well drained slightly alkaline soil. The tall species of carnations and pinks have a loose habit and will need staking. Dead-heading of repeat-flowering types is beneficial.
