Sweet chestnut, Chestnut, Chinkapin, Chinqapin
Castanea genus (Sweet chestnut). These are deciduous trees. They will bear edible nuts which are enclosed in a prickly husk. The leaves are elliptical with regularly toothed margins. In the spring or early summer they will produce clusters of stiff catkins of male flowers.
They are fully hardy and will require sun or semi-shade; they will grow particularly well in hot, dry areas. They will need fertile well drained soil, and will grow poorly on shallow chalky soil.
Grown for their foliage, stately habit, flowers and edible fruits (chestnuts). Suitable for coastal conditions.
